New Pepsi Max adverts have tended to be events for football fans, more so than the traditional football campaign. Ronaldinho, David Beckham, Roberto Carlos and almost every other early-2000s legend laid the groundwork, with Lionel Messi (little Argentinian lad, plays for Barcelona, you know?) picking up the mantle in years since.
Messi has been joined in the drinks brand’s new advert, ‘Fizz to Life’, for the return of the 2020/21 Champions League by European stars Paul Pogba, Jadon Sancho and Shanice van de Sanden – although the real star of the show is Pogba’s deep purple suit combo.
The ad is soundtracked by “Rotate”, a track created especially for the spot, by global superstar Becky G and two-time Grammy nominated Afro-fusion musician Burna Boy, as the footballers chase each other through posters and magazines.
The spot was directed by Raine Allen-Miller, who said: “It was an honor to work with some of the world’s biggest football talent and to be able to showcase the players’ unique personalities and passions in the film. I had a great time collaborating with Pepsi MAX to create a visually compelling world for the film and tell this fast-paced and fun story – which I know both football and music fans are going to love!”
For the social media-minded, Rotate will be the soundtrack to a world-first football challenge with TikTok Duet. Additionally, the campaign’s limited-edition packaging, featuring the four players, gives fans an augmented reality experience accessed through a QR code on the pack, opening up an interactive game with their favourite players and the option to share their scores to Instagram Stories.
The Champions League returned from its customary winter break last week, with Sancho’s Dortmund side earning a 3-2 win away at Sevilla while Messi and Barcelona were dismantled 4-1 by a Kylian Mbappe-inspired Paris Saint-Germain.
