Borussia Dortmund are poised to reduce Jadon Sancho’s asking price to £88m following the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic, potentially paving the way for Manchester United to renew their interest.
The Red Devils have long been linked with a move for Sancho, and were expected to male a blockbuster bid for the England international during the 2020 transfer window.
However, as the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic unfolded, United refused to break the £100m barrier in their attempts to land the former Manchester City man, while Dortmund refused to budge from their £108m valuation of the player.
A transfer window of fruitless negotiations ensued, and Sancho ultimately stayed put.
However, 90min reported in January that United were confident that their decision to not bow to Dortmund’s demands and shatter the club’s transfer record to sign Sancho in the summer would pay off in 2021 as they believed the German side would have to lower their price due to the global financial circumstances.
According to German news outlet Bild (via the Express) this is now the case, with Dortmund prepared to part ways with the 20-year-old for a reduced price of £88m in an attempt to balance the books following the pandemic.
The Bundesliga outfit are anticipating losses of up to £66m due to Covid-19, and the sale of Sancho would help to ease their financial woes.
Despite spending nearly £30m on Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo after failing to land Sancho in the summer, 90min revealed in November that the Dortmund forward still remained high on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wish list.
The Red Devils have not been discouraged by the winger’s loss of form this season, and still regard him as an ideal signing.
Sancho has three goals in 17 Bundesliga appearances this term with Dortmund currently sitting sixth, having found the net 17 times during the previous campaign.
