Manchester City stretched their winning run in all competitions to 21 games, after three goals in the final 10 minutes helped them to a 4-1 victory over Wolves on Tuesday evening.
As expected, City started in the ascendency and would take the lead when Riyad Mahrez’s cutback was diverted into his own net by Leander Dendoncker inside 16 minutes.
The hosts barely let their opponents have a kick for the rest of the first half and thought they had scored again just before the break, only for Aymeric Laporte’s strike to be ruled out for offside.
City continued to dominate until, incredibly, Wolves scored with their first shot of the game on the hour mark. Conor Coady was the hero, nodding home Joao Moutinho’s free kick to level up the scores.
Wolves then had a handful of additional chances before City began to dial up the pressure once again. Eventually this paid off, when Jesus capitalised on the chaos in Wolves’ box following Kyle Walker searching cross by smashing home from close range. Mahrez then put the game beyond all doubt, finishing calmly in the box after a mistake from Owen Otasowie.
Then with the last kick of the game, Jesus netted a second goal which took an infuriatingly long amount of time to be confirmed by VAR.
Here are your player ratings from the Etihad Stadium…
Ederson (GK) – 6/10 – For the first 60 minutes he could have completed all of today’s broadsheet crosswords, such was his limited involvement. Little he could do to keep out Coady’s well placed header.
Kyle Walker (RB) – 8/10 – Showed his speed with some recovery runs. His long passing was good also. Timed his run perfectly to in the lead up to City’s winner.
Ruben Dias (CB) – 7/10 – Was having another exemplary game, until he lost his man, Coady, for Wolves’ equaliser. Some of his passing was excellent.
Aymeric Laporte (CB) – 7/10 – Had a goal chalked off for offside. It was a shame as his resolute display deserved a reward.
Joao Cancelo (LB) – 7/10 – Another influential display from full-back. He stepped up into midfield in possession and displayed his impressive vision.
Rodri (DM) – 7/10 – Did the dirty work, covering for his teammates when they ventured forward. Kept possession circulating with his accurate passing.
Kevin De Bruyne (CM) – 7/10 – A potent source of creativity. He did not take over the game as imperiously as we know he can, but you still noticed his class.
Bernardo Silva (CM) – 7/10 – A real menace. He found acres of space both between the lines and used his clever movement to drag Wolves defenders out of position.
Riyad Mahrez (RW) – 9/10 – A fine performance. He created the opening goal and managed to cut inside and shoot on several occasions. He toasted his fine display with a goal in the closing stages.
Gabriel Jesus (ST) – 9/10 – Spurned a couple of presentable chances in the second half but made up for that by grabbing two goals.
Raheem Sterling (LW) – 7/10 – Made some intelligent runs in behind early on. Also did well when taking the ball to his feet.
Ilkay Gundogan – 7/10 – Showed good composure in the build up to the third goal.
Rui Patricio (GK) – 7/10 – Made a couple of really good stops from Silva and De Bruyne to keep his side in it in the second half.
Leander Dendoncker (CB) – 4/10 – One thing you don’t want to be doing against City is scoring an own goal. Pretty ropey after that as well.
Conor Coady (CB) – 5/10 – A captain’s goal! Shame it meant absolutely nothing in the end!
Romain Saiss (CB) – 4/10 – His positioning was suspect at times, with the defender playing City attackers onside on several occasions.
Ki-Jana Hoever (RWB) – 4/10 – Had a tough evening trying to keep tabs on Sterling, De Bruyne and Cancelo. He was dribbled past more than any other player on the pitch.
Ruben Neves (CM) – 5/10 – Seriously struggled to get his foot on the ball in the first half, essentially playing as an addition centre-back. Did slightly better after the break – for a little bit anyway.
Joao Moutinho (CM) – 6/10 – Worked hard and kept his defensive shape. His free kick delivery for Coady’s goal was scrumptious.
Jonny (LWB) – 5/10 – Caught in no man’s land more than once due to Silva’s and Mahrez’s clever movement. Exposed for the opener.
Nelson Semedo (RW) – 4/10 – Had a pretty poor evening. Not sure what he was doing for City’s second goal and his contribution in the final third was negligible.
Adama Traore (ST) – 4/10 – A few movement of promise in transition. However, he lacked the vision to break City down effectively.
Pedro Neto (LW) – 4/10 – Absolutely swarmed by City’s press whenever he got the ball. Little he could do to prevent it.
Fabio Silva – 6/10 – Linked things fairly effectively after coming on. Perhaps should have started.
Owen Otasowie – 4/10 – Came on, gave away a goal, went off.
