Man Utd ‘trigger Romelu Lukaku clause’ which leaves Inter in £43m debt

Manchester United are said to have triggered a clause in the deal that saw Romelu Lukaku move to Inter which leaves the Nerazzurri with £43m worth of debt.

When Lukaku made the switch in 2019, the two clubs agreed for the hefty fee – believed to be around £66m – to be paid in instalments. However, United managed to negotiate a clause where the entire remaining fee would be due if Inter ever missed a deadline for one of these payments.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Serie A side have done just that, failing to meet the cut off point for a bonus that was due in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. United have taken this opportunity to activate the aforementioned ‘all in one’ clause, meaning Inter have now been left with around £43m worth of debt.

United are pressuring the Nerazzurri to find the outstanding amount and one possible solution could involve Lautaro Martinez or Milan Skriniar departing San Siro. The Red Devils are thought to be keen on both players and may be willing to write off the Lukaku debt and pay an additional sum in order to sign one of them.

Although Inter will be keen to keep hold of both players, they may be forced into selling them in order to settle their debt.

It should be noted that Corriere’s report is pretty sensationalist throughout, while La Repubblica’s Franco Vanni has suggested the two clubs had previously renegotiated a new timeframe for the payments. Given the profile of both Martinez and Skriniar, it seems extremely unlikely that Inter would let them leave as compensation for a missed payment rather than simply reschedule the payment.

Since arriving at the club, Lukaku has proved to be an inspired signing. During his first season he notched 34 goals and he has been in even better form this time out. So far, he has managed 24 goals and six assists in just 31 games, with his incredible form helping Inter stake a claim for the first Scudetto since 2010. They currently top Serie A by four points with 14 matches left to play.
