Manchester City right-back Lucy Bronze has been named Barclays Player of the Month for February in the Women’s Super League as a result of inspiring her team to three important wins.
Brighton boss Hope Powell, meanwhile, has scooped February’s Barclays Manager of the Month award thanks to two timely victories that helped put the Seagulls well clear of the relegation zone.
City beat Arsenal, Manchester United and Birmingham in the WSL in February to put the pressure on leaders and reigning champions Chelsea.
Bronze even opened the scoring in the Manchester derby that City went on to win 3-0.
Brighton made huge strides in February, kicking off the month with an incredible yet unexpected 2-1 away win over Chelsea. That made Powell’s team the first in the WSL to beat Chelsea since 2019 and ended an astonishing 33-game unbeaten run.
From there, the Seagulls went on to record a clean in a 1-0 win over West Ham.
Both Manchester City and Brighton have continued their good form into March. City have now won nine WSL games in a row, while Brighton have won each of their last three.
The next round of WSL fixtures are spread over the next week. Reading host Tottenham on Friday, before four games are played next Wednesday (17 March), including Manchester City’s trip to Bristol City and Brighton’s visit to Aston Villa. Chelsea are also in action against Everton.
Next Friday (19 March), the gameweek concludes when Arsenal host Manchester United. The Gunners have been knocked out of the top three by United this season and will be out for revenge after losing against the new challengers for the first time earlier in the campaign.
