Teden Mengi extends Manchester United contract until 2024

Teden Mengi has signed a new Manchester United deal that will keep him at the club until June 2024.

The 18-year-old made his senior debut last season, coming on as a late substitute during his side’s Europa League win over LASK. In January he joined Derby County on loan, linking up with United legend and Rams boss Wayne Rooney. Since then the centre-back has made six Championship appearances.

United have clearly been impressed by his development and they announced that he had penned fresh terms on Wednesday. His new contract will see him remain at Old Trafford until at least 2024.

Mengi has been at United since the age of seven and has frequently been named captain as he has progressed through the youth ranks. He has also been capped by England at Under-17 and Under-18 level.

After making his debut last year, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was full of praise for the youngster, saying: “He’s a leader. A centre-back. Of course, he’s one that we believe in. He’s the age group of Mason [Greenwood], so they’ve grown up together as good mates. He’s strong, quick, good on the ball, so I think we’ve got a decent player there.”

Mengi becomes the third young player that United have tied down to a longer deal this month. Anthony Elanga, who won the club’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award for 2019/20, recently penned fresh terms, while Hannibal Mejbri, who the club signed from Monaco two years ago, also agreed a new long term contract.

There have been other off-field developments too. Last week the club announced that John Murtough would become the club’s first football director, with Darren Fletcher being moved into a technical director role.
