Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hails Paul Pogba’s match-winning performance against Milan

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised the impact Paul Pogba had in their their Europa League win at Milan on Thursday, and hopes his return will spur United on for the rest of the season.

Pogba has missed the last six weeks with a hamstring injury, and made his comeback in the second half of United’s 1-0 win at San Siro, scoring the winner just minutes after coming on at the break.

Solskjaer was first and foremost glad to claim such a famous result, but was also delighted with the performance.

“When you win a game of football away from home in a stadium like this against a team like this, you’re very happy,” Solskjaer said, as quoted by Sky Sports.

“We started really well I felt. First 15-20 minutes I thought we looked like a very good team.

“Then there was a spell from halfway through the first half to half-time that we rushed things, missed the ball, lost the ball too often, made it a long game.

“I just had to reiterate a couple of things and second half I felt we were much, much better.”

He added that while Pogba looked rusty on his return, that was to be expected, and he still showed the undoubted quality he brings to Man Utd.

“Paul looked like he’d been out for six weeks, yeah, for sure,” Solskjaer said. “He’s been working really hard but when you play football it’s different and you can see that he needs…he couldn’t play more than 45 and he’ll get better and better.

“That’s a big, big boost for us rest of the season because the boys have done fantastic without him but we know Paul’s qualities.”

Speaking to BT Sport about Pogba, Solskjaer added: “We’ve missed Paul. He’s been out for almost two months and any team would miss a player like Paul Pogba. He was just getting into his best form and he’s very important for us.”

Man Utd will discover their opponents in the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Friday.
