After spending the last 15 years pointlessly trying to decide who’s better out of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi – and never even looking like settling on a universally accepted winner – what more do we need than a new superstar duo to argue about?

Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are already beginning to lay the foundations of a titanic footballing rivalry – y’know, the type where everyone in the world is convinced they hate each other when in reality they really couldn’t care less but that doesn’t fit the narrative we’ve created.

Both youngsters seem to smash more and more records as the weeks pass by, so why not ramp up the imaginary duel by getting their fellow players involved.

In an interview with Marca, Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez was asked to pick between the pair, and his reply probably isn’t much of a surprise as he showed support for his fellow number nine: “A little more for Haaland, but Mbappe is at a very high level.”

The Uruguay international lauded the qualities of the young Borussia Dortmund frontman and said he had the ability to make a real mark in the game.

“He is a great player, he is at a spectacular level. He has an admirable physical power. He is one of the best 9 in the world that will mark an era,” he added.

Suarez was asked a whole host of questions in relation to reaching a landmark 500-career goals in Atleti’s recent win over Alaves, though the subject soon switched to the plight of his former club Barcelona.

Barça are in the midst of a financial crisis, with Suarez departing Camp Nou last summer as a result of it and star man Messi potentially heading out of the club at the end of the season.

The former Barcelona frontman said he still has a lot of love for the Blaugrana and keeps up to date with their progress, adding that he is in constant contact with Messi.

“You know the love they have for what I did,” he said. “I see them because one likes to watch football. One feels admiration for the club he defended and I am grateful. I have contact with Leo almost daily, but sometimes from some match.”
