Raphael Varane has dropped another strong hint that his future lies away from Real Madrid this summer, with a potential switch to Manchester United on the cards.
The France star’s future at the Bernabeu remains in doubt, with the experienced defender’s current deal due to expire in 2022. Those doubts have led to continued rumours that both United and French giants PSG will move for the 27-year-old.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo states that Varane’s future remains ‘up in the air’ at this stage.
The player’s latest comments certainly appear to suggest that he’s leaning towards taking on a new adventure this summer.
Varane did not directly address rumours linking him with a move away from the club while on international duty. But that only adds fuel to the fire, given that his previous stance on wanting to leave remains unchanged.
He said: “I am not going to state the obvious, I have already expressed myself a lot on the subject.
“I think it has already been said and the situation has not changed.
“I’m two days away from an international match with the national team, I am concentrating on that. I don’t want to answer that question on my future.”
It’s been stated that the centre-back does not want to commit his long-term future to Real. The main reason given for that decision is that boss Zinedine Zidane has not given a strong indication of which path he wants to take with his defence next season.
Another Real stalwart, Sergio Ramos, is out of contract this summer and could also quit the club.
To that end, the LaLiga giants are being linked with moves for Bayern’s David Alaba and Villarreal star Pau Torres.
Varane looking to move on
Mundo Deportivo adds that all this uncertainty means Varane does not yet want to sign an extension.
Alaba confirmed last month that he would be leaving Bayern at the end of the season, saying: “I have personally made the decision to leave FC Bayern at the end of this season and try something new.
“It obviously wasn’t an easy decision – I’ve been here for 13 years and the club is very important to me. I decided for myself to try something new, a new challenge.
“First of all, I haven’t decided which club I’m going to join yet. There are many factors involved. I will give a lot of thought to that.
“Where can I continue to play successful football? That will greatly influence my decision. This lies in the future and we will see.”
According to Sky Sports, Alaba has his heart set on a move to Real or bitter rivals Barcelona.
Should Alaba make the move to Madrid and Zidane then convince Ramos to stay, that would leave Varane’s place in serious doubt.
Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made signing a new centre-back one of his top priorities this summer.
The likes of Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and fellow Real target Pau Torres are on his radar, along with Varane.
The latter would certainly provide the top level experience Solskjaer wants alongside Harry Maguire.
What’s more, a recent report in the MEN claimed that Real would be willing to sell the player to United.
