Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has admitted that Los Blancos will struggle to sign Erling Haaland in the next transfer window.
Haaland will enter this summer’s market as arguably the most in-demand player in world football. The 20-year-old, who announced himself at RB Salzburg, has made waves at Borussia Dortmund since his December 2019 move. As such, Madrid as well as Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City, all have a strong interest.
Reports have revealed that the striker will have a €75million (£64million) release clause from summer 2022.
However, in a bid not to lose out on the talent, clubs may well wish to pay the extra before the start of next season. Indeed, a move this summer for the Norwegian would likely cost over £100million.
United, Chelsea and City could well afford Haaland this summer, but according to Calderon – who remains connected to goings-on at Madrid – his former club will not have the finances to compete.
“There are always rumours at this time of the season,” the 69-year-old told talkSPORT.
“They are talking about Mbappe, Haaland… too many players.
“We are not in the best form economically-speaking because we are refurbishing our stadium spending a lot of money.
“It will be difficult to spend money in the summer.
“We always try to sign good players, we’ve been doing that for years.”
Madrid have suffered harshly the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic over the past 12 months.
City’s owners could well finance a deal for Haaland, while Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has supposedly made it his ‘personal mission’ to land the marksman.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has previously warned that his side cannot spend big in the next few months. Nevertheless, reports (Manchester Evening News) have indicated that he has made Haaland his top striker target.
Man Utd eyeing deal for Wolves star
As well as Haaland, Wolves winger Pedro Neto is reportedly a target for United.
The 21-year-old has emerged as one of his club’s star players in a largely dismal season for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.
What’s more, reports indicate that the Red Devils have a secret weapon to lure the Portuguese forward to Old Trafford.
