Manchester United will likely need to sell either Paul Pogba or Jesse Lingard if they are to make further signings this summer.
United have already committed to a net spend of over £100m this transfer window, having finally completed the signing of Jadon Sancho (£73m) – a player they have been pursuing since 2019 – as well as the imminent arrival of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid (£40m).
The club are keen to add further reinforcements at full back, with Atletico Madrid‘s Kieran Trippier one of their key targets. They could also do with a midfielder due to the shortcomings of Fred and Scott McTominay.
However, according to the Telegraph, United will need to sell before bringing in anymore recruits. Due to their recent reduction in revenue the club have earmarked a net spend of between £75m and £100m this summer.
In order to balance the books they will need to sell and Pogba and Lingard seem the most likely to be moved on. The latter has been linked with a transfer for several years and with just one year left on his contract United are wary of losing him on a free next summer.
Paris Saint-Germain are said to be monitoring his situation closely and have could fetch a fee of around £50m. A source has told 90min that Pogba is in no rush to decide his future, though. United are split over whether he warrants a big money deal or not. His new contract would make him the highest paid player in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Lingard is another player whose future may lie away from Old Trafford. He seriously impressed on loan at West Ham last season and is valued at around £30m. The Hammers are not the only side interested, though. Several other clubs from across the continent would love to sign him.
In terms of fringe players United could move on this summer, Axel Tuanzebe, Brandon Williams, Diogo Dalot, Andreas Pereira and Facundo Pellestri are all candidates. Most would only depart on loan but others could be sold permanently if the right offer came in.
