Paper Talk: Major target made to wait as Man Utd set new transfer priority

Manchester United already know their next area to strengthen after the imminent arrival of Raphael Varane, while one unwanted Arsenal player has seen an old escape route open up again – all in Tuesday’s transfer gossip.

MAN UTD SET PRIORITY AFTER VARANE

Manchester United will prioritise the signing of a midfielder once they wrap up a deal for Raphael Varane; only after then will they turn their attention to right-back Kieran Trippier.

That’s according to Manchester Evening News, who expect United’s next signing after Varane to be a midfielder and not a full-back.

United have found an agreement to sign long-term target Varane from Real Madrid to bolster the centre-back department. It will be a further statement of intent following the arrival of another long-term target, winger Jadon Sancho.

But the club are not expected to be finished there as they look to win a first trophy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

They have been heavily linked with bringing Trippier back to England after he won the Spanish La Liga title with Atletico Madrid. He would be a more attack-minded option than Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back, giving Solskjaer two good options.

But according to the MEN, Trippier will not be the next arrival at Old Trafford after Varane. Instead, they will focus their attention on signing a new midfielder first.

Paul Pogba is in the final year of his contract and it looks increasingly likely that he won’t sign a renewal. United will not want to lose a player of his value for free for a second time, so may have to sell.

With that in mind, they are looking for another reinforcement. Among the players they have been linked with are Eduardo Camavinga, Declan Rice and Leon Goretzka, but none will be easy to sign.

Camavinga and Rice both have high asking prices and Goretzka, although in the final year of his contract with Bayern, may simply be using United’s interest to help get a better deal at his current club.

Saul Niguez is another option, potentially in a double raid on Atletico involving Trippier as well.

At present, though, the latter will have to wait until United can sign a new midfielder before he can make such a move.
