Napoli president De Laurentiis backs Lorenzo Insigne’s decision to join Toronto FC

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis believes Lorenzo Insigne has made the right decision in moving to Major League Soccer with Toronto FC.

The 53-time Italy international rejected contract extension offers from Napoli, with the Partenopei only willing to pay a fraction of what he currently earns.

As a result, Insigne will join Toronto FC on June 30 as the highest-paid player in MLS history. Reports suggest the forward could earn in the region of Can$13m per year, with 90min revealing his best offer from Europe was $170k per week from Tottenham Hotspur.

De Laurentiis clearly doesn’t hold any grudges against Insigne, praising his decision on a financial basis.

“He is a free man and therefore it is only right he makes the decisions that he finds to be correct to take care of his future,” De Laurentiis said (via Football Italia).

“It is a long life nowadays, with a bit of good luck and some healthy eating, if he’s got good genes, he could reach 110 years of age.

“So he might have 80 years ahead of him and has to think about that, it’s only right he tries to take care of his future. This is nothing to feel guilty about.”

Barring a couple of loan spells, Insigne has spent his entire career with Napoli, scoring 115 goals in 418 games so far and winning two Coppa Italia titles. At international level, he has 10 goals in 53 caps and was part of the Italy side that won the European Championships last summer.

He’ll certainly bring plenty of pedigree to TFC, who have been hard at work overhauling their roster this off-season under new head coach Bob Bradley.

The Reds failed to make the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2021 but alongside Insigne, have since acquired Mexican center-back Carlos Salcedo while the re-signing of striker Ayo Akinola lists high among their prominent winter moves.
