Paper Talk: Mo Salah ‘fixated’ on LaLiga boss; Gavi contract twist

Barcelona are chasing Liverpool star Mo Salah and the striker is said to be “fixated” on Xavi, Gavi’s contract situation has taken a twist and Arsenal and Spurs are interested in a Rennes starlet, all in the papers.

Barcelona manager Xavi is interested in bringing Liverpool contract rebel Mo Salah to the Camp Nou, according to one report in Spain.

Xavi is looking to rebuild the Catalan giants this summer and Barca will not be held to ransom by Erling Haaland, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Mundo Deportivo says that Norway superstar Haaland is Barca’s No.1 strike target, but they will not risk the whole future of the club to sign the prolific striker. With that in mind Xavi has put forward his interest to the Barca hierarchy in the Liverpool striker.

Salah, 29, is under contract until 2023 at Anfield, but so far he has been unable to agree an extension. Jurgen Klopp wants the player to stay and continues to play down the situation. But as yet the Reds have yet to match Salah’s contract demands.

“I want to stay, but it’s not in my hands. It’s in their hands. They know what I want. I’m not asking for crazy stuff,” Salah said in January.

Barca know that Salah still has plenty of years left at the top level, and per the report, Salah is “fixated” on Xavi and his style of play in Catalonia.

The Catalan club also have an eye on Bayern Munich and Poland striker Robert Lewandowski, says the Daily Mail.

Gavi, Barcelona, February 2022.

Liverpool have been handed a lift with reports suggesting Barcelona starlet Gavi has rejected a third contract offer.

Gavi is understood to be a target for Jurgen Klopp with El Nacional reporting the Premier League club’s interest before Christmas.

The Reds were apparently prepared to pay him £80,000-a-week in order to secure his signature and offer him an £8m signing on fee.

Now Sport and Marca both say Gavi  has rejected a third contract offer at the Camp Nou and what’s more there isn’t much financially they can do to improve it.

Instead Xavi is hoping his “project” and “vision” will be enough to keep hold of the 17-year-old.

The midfielder reportedly has a £42.4m release clause in his contract, which runs until 2023.

Lesley Ugochukwu Rennes December 2021

French outlet L’Equipe are reporting Arsenal and Tottenham are both interested in signing 17-year-old midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu from Rennes.

Both Premier League club’s scouts are tracking the youngster, who has recently returned from injury. An ankle injury had kept the defensive midfielder sidelined for the last six weeks. But he returned with a cameo from the bench against Metz last week.

The French midfielder has made 13 appearances for the senior team in Ligue 1 this season, including three starts.

The France U18 international is under contract until 2024 after coming up through the ranks at Rennes.

German giants Borussia Dortmund are also tracking the Rennes man.

Rennes have previously developed the talents of Ousmane Dembele and Eduardo Camavinga.
